An X by Any Other Name
The show's original title was "Genome X." Producer Rick Ungar stated that when it was changed to Mutant X for clarity, they "kinda forgot" that Howard Mackie's X-Men comics already had the name Mutant X.
All in the Family
Victoria Pratt (Shalimar Fox)'s husband T.J. Scott directed 4 episodes. Tom McCamus (Mason Eckhart)'s wife Chick Reid played Nicole Carter in "Blood Ties." Victor Webster (Brennan Mulwary)'s beloved dog Buddah had cameos in "Double Vision" and "Dancing on the Razor."
X-Ties Severed
After the Fox vs. Marvel lawsuit, some similarities to X-Men were nixed before the show aired. For example, the names Adam Xero (renamed Adam Kane) and Albion Magnus (renamed Mason Eckhart) resembled their X-Men counterparts Professor Xavier and Magneto, and the Mutant X team had code names: Shalimar Fox = Shadowfox, Jesse Kilmartin = Synergy, Brennan Mulwray = Fuse, Emma deLauro = Rapport.
Professor X's Cameo
Cedric Smith, who played Dr. Paul Breedlove in the first episode, gave voice to Professor Xavier in the animated X-Men series. George Buza, who played Lexa's Dominion Contact in the third season, was the voice of Beast.
Suitable Surnames
As in X-Men, some Mutant X mutants have descriptive last names. Frank Thorne is the thorn in Mutant X’s side. Daniel Benedict betrayed his family like a Benedict Arnold. Wendy Stone increases molecular density. Mr. Lynch suffocates victims. Pamela Fries (actually pronounced 'Freeze') can heat or cool objects by touch. Andrea Marshall worked for the Justice Department. Lexa Disa Pierce can disa-ppear and shoot piercing lasers.
Where the streets have no name
Also as in X-Men, streets and buildings are often homages to comic book authors. In "Shock of the New," Brennan robs Hickman-Wrightson Securities. In "Fool for Love," Jack Mitchell's office is Hartwell Brokerage on Mason. In "Crime of the New Century," Brennan meets Jesse at Fawcett Avenue, near Briggs. In "Whiter Shade of Pale," Jesse tracks the sequencer to the Hotel Infantino on Carmine Street.
Podding Reversal
The season one finale, "A Breed Apart," actually aired before the penultimate episode, "Dancing on the Razor." Thus fans watching in numerical order will see Mason, who was podded 'for all eternity' in episode 121, pop back up unharmed in 122, only to mysteriously become re-podded in season 2.
Genomex's Popularity
The R.C. Harris filtration plant used to film Genomex headquarters also appears in the tv series Psi Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal, as The Center in The Pretender, and as The Man's headquarters in the film Undercover Brother. Other Canadian locations used include the Skywalk escalator between Rogers Centre and Union Station, the Gardiner Expressway near Cherry Street studios, the Ontario Science Centre, the Scarborough Bluffs, the Old Don Jail, Ontario Place Cinesphere, and Guild Inn and Park.
The Nikita Connection
Most of Mutant X's production crew, including producer Jamie Paul Rock, storyboard artist Doug McRae, costume designer Laurie Drew, and production designer Rocco Matteo, worked on the tv series La Femme Nikita before Mutant X. Several guest stars, notably Eugene Robert Glazer and Nigel Bennett, had previous roles on LFN, and the chair used to hold new mutants at Genomex regularly appeared in LFN as a torture device.
